Coventry City could be ready to hand former Chelsea midfielder Charlie Colkett a deal in the summer with the Sky Blues having invited him to train with them, according to The Mirror.

Colkett is currently without a club having departed Swedish side Östersund, where he had been playing since January 2019 after making the permanent switch from Chelsea. The midfielder had spent a lot of time away from Stamford Bridge on loan with the likes of Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town, Vitesse and Shrewsbury Town and was thought to be highly regarded by the Blues.

However, following his departure from Östersund he is now looking to find a new club for next season so he can get his career back on track. The 24-year-old has been given the chance to train with the Sky Blues and try and impress manager Mark Robins so that he can earn a contract for next season, according to The Mirror.

It is also being reported that the Sky Blues are now wanting to offer Colkett a contract in the summer to remain with them and play a part for them next season. That could see the 24-year-old make a return to English football and he will be keen to show what he can offer in the Championship.

The verdict

This seems like a low-risk type of move for the Sky Blues to consider in the summer and they have done the sensible thing in inviting him to train with the first-team squad so that they can assess his abilities before committing to any sort of contract. It seems that the midfielder has impressed enough to earn a deal with Coventry for next term now.

Colkett is clearly a player that has a lot of natural talent, and Robins has previously shown that he can guide such players on the right path and sort of get their careers going again. That is something he achieved with the likes of Matty James this term. Therefore, the Sky Blues could have found themselves a potentially exciting addition.

The 24-year-old will be aware that next season is his chance to really shine now and that he will be needing to make a positive impact to start to fulfil his potential. If he can add a lot of quality to the squad then the Sky Blues might even be able to make a sizeable profit on him further down the line.
