Former Liverpool and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is reportedly considering his options following an offer from Barnsley.

The 30-year-old is a free agent after leaving Italian side Brescia in the summer and it appears the Tykes are hoping to be his next club.

Late last night reports indicated that the Oakwell outfit had made Balotelli an offer and The Athletic have revealed his stance today.

It is understood that the striker is still considering his options and plotting his next move following Barnsley's offer.

The Yorkshire club's owners already have a link to the Italian, as Chien Lee was the owner of Nice during Balotelli's time at the club – which was in the most part a fruitful period for the forward.

The 30-year-old is familiar with English football having featured for both Man City and Liverpool in the past.

His spell with the former was significantly more impressive as he scored 30 times in 80 appearances.

Barnsley are 16th in the Championship as things stand, six points off the top six and six points clear of the relegation zone.

The Verdict

This would be one of the most surprising EFL signings for a long time and it appears Barnsley's hopes of landing Balotelli are still alive.

The 30-year-old hasn't rejected the offer, which is clearly a good sign, and likely already has a relationship with the owners.

It's way too early for Tykes fans to get excited but if they can get this done it could be a phenomenal signing given the level he's played and thrived at in the past.
