Peterborough United winger Marcus Maddison has responded to rumours linking him with a move to League One rivals Sunderland.

During a Q&A on his Instagram story, Maddison was asked if there was any truth in the stories linking him with a move to the Stadium of Light and to the club the winger supported growing up.

And the 25-year-old responded pretty elusively, sharing a photograph of himself in the Black Cats' youth side along with the caption: "This is my only link to Sunderland that I know of."

There have been calls from fans of the North East club to bring Maddison in, although Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has repeatedly denied that any negotiations had taken place.

Jack Ross will be keen to strengthen his Sunderland side ahead of the new campaign after coming so close to winning promotion straight back to the Championship last season, and Maddison seems like an ideal candidate.

Last season saw him bag ten goals and 23 assists in all competitions as the Posh narrowly missed out on a spot in the play-off places.

The verdict

I don't think you can read too much into this at all.

As much as I think Maddison would be up for moving to Sunderland if the chance arose, I also think he is perfectly happy at Peterborough and is not about to start pushing for a move.

He has one year left on his deal then I believe he will be on his way with the best wishes of the club and then Sunderland might be able to get their man.
