Peterborough United winger Marcus Maddison has fired a joke towards Sunderland manager Jack Ross following the Black Cats' 3-0 defeat to the Posh on Saturday.

Maddison scored twice against a club to which he has been heavily linked with a move this summer, including a stunning free-kick in the first-half to open the scoring.

Following the goal, he celebrated with a folded arm pose in front of both dug-outs with a picture emerging afterwards of an unimpressed Ross appearing to mirror the pose.

It was a match that rounded-off an impressive opening month for the 25-year-old, scoring three goals and racking-up a further six assists.

With the transfer window now shut, however, he will remain a Peterborough player until January at the very least.

Maddison reportedly has a release clause of £2.5million but with just one year remaining on his contract, the Sunderland board apparently did not see it as a sensible investment.

The North East side had been on a five-game winning run in all competitions before visiting London Road but still remain in the top-six.

The verdict

I am absolutely baffled that no club in the Championship paid the release clause for Maddison.

Yes, he is heading into the final year of his deal, but he is an outstanding talent and a match-winner. There are plenty of teams in the second-tier who could do with one of those.

However, their and Sunderland's loss is very much Peterborough's gain and he looks set to play a huge part in their promotion push.
