Marcelo Bielsa dropped hints over Tyler Roberts’ future Leeds United selection following his brace against Hull on Saturday.

The Welsh forward netted a fine brace against Yorkshire rivals Hull City on Saturday, with both goals coming within three minutes of each other. His goalscoring exploits at the KCOM on Saturday will give Bielsa something to think about going into a crucial game against Huddersfield Town on the weekend.

The Welshman only arrived onto the pitch with 23 minutes left to play but would go on to have a huge impact on the scoreline. His first goal came courtesy of a wonderful sweeping Leeds move that began just outside their own area; several passes later and the ball was laid on a plate for Roberts to drill the ball past the helpless George Long.

His second came just three minutes later as Mateusz Klich was given the freedom of the pitch to play a wonderful clipped delivery into the Hull penalty area - Roberts had timed his run to perfection and made contact with the ball as he flew through the air, with the ball cannoning off his head and into the top corner.

Marcelo Bielsa praised the former West Brom man, explaining how is is an alternative to Patrick Bamford in the No.9 role.

“Clearly it is an option,” Bielsa explained, as quoted by the Daily Star.

"Tyler can play in this position. Normally we always have two players to fight for one position. He can be an option for Patrick and he also can be an option for Klich or Pablo as playmaker."

With Bielsa seeing the versatility in Roberts’ game, it may lead to him featuring from the start at Elland Road on Saturday as well as playing a pivotal role in the run-in. With Bamford not finding the net since his brace against Millwall in late January, it is clear to see why there are calls for Roberts to start up top for Leeds.

The Verdict

Roberts impressed everybody with his display on the weekend against Hull. To be able to come on and swing the game so much in his team’s favour in such a short period of time requires a lot of skill. His first goal for instance was extraordinary play from Leeds as they passed their way through the thirds and into a goalscoring opportunity, something Bielsa must’ve been extremely happy with. He took his goal well and as soon as the ball fell for him, he looked confident that he was going to unleash a strike into the corner.

However, it was his second goal that will get the supporters talking - a goal that Leeds fans may have become accustomed to seeing Patrick Bamford scoring this season. Not only was the ball from Klich inch-perfect, but the timing of the run to be finished off in that manor was excellent. He ghosted into the penalty area behind the defenders but once they’d seen him it was too late.

The Welshman could have a huge role to play if Leeds are to fulfil their ambitions of reaching the Premier League this year, with Bielsa teasing we could see Roberts either in Bamford's role or slightly deeper, as an alternative to his playmakers.
