Leeds United have recently announced that Pablo Hernandez has signed a new deal with the club to keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2022.

Hernandez has been a key member of Marcelo Bielsa's squad in recent seasons, and will be hoping that he can play his part in their push for promotion to the Premier League this term.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference (12:34pm) ahead of their game against Luton Town, Bielsa felt that Hernandez's new contract was deserved and claimed that the midfielder is respected by his fellow Leeds team-mates.

"I think the extension is deserved. He has a lot of impact on the team, every supporter recognises him. Everybody values him. He is respected by his team-mates. I think the same."

Hernandez played a starring role for the Whites last season, as they narrowly missed out on promotion after a defeat to Derby County in the play-off semi-final.

The Spaniard hit 12 goals and was on hand to provide 12 assists in last year's campaign, and will be keen to replicate that sort of form for Bielsa's team this season.

He's had his fair share of injury problems this term though, but will be hoping he can get back to his best at the earliest of opportunities, after returning to the first team squad in recent weeks.

Hernandez and his Leeds United team-mates will be hoping they can come away from Kenilworth Road with another three points to aid their promotion bid heading into the festive period.

The Verdict:

I have to agree with Bielsa here.

Hernandez has been key to their success in recent seasons and without him, Leeds wouldn't have stood a chance in even challenging for promotion back into the Premier League.

I'm confident that he'll play his part in their promotion push this term, and firmly believe that this is going to be their year to do just that.

The disappointment of last season will spur Hernandez and the Leeds squad on.
