Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has been discussing the topic of penalties as his side prepare to start their play-off campaign against Derby County this weekend, reports Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Whites have missed all three of their previous spot-kicks, with Kemar Roofe the latest culprit, but Bielsa has dismissed the usefulness of practising them for potential shootouts.

"You can be good at penalties but not in front of 50,000 people," he told his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

"You can be good in games but not in a game like this.

"What I'm telling you is that it's meaningless to prepare for penalties."

There is no love lost between the two sides following the Spygate saga that engulfed the build up to their January clash, a topic that continues to rear its head.

It is the Whites who head into the match with the better head-to-head record having already beaten the Rams 2-0 and 4-0 this season, however, Frank Lampard boasts the in form team having lost just once in their 12 previous matches.

In the other half of the play-offs, local rivals Aston Villa welcome West Bromwich Albion to Villa Park.

The verdict

It is hard to disagree with Bielsa here.

You may have a striker available who slots penalties away for fun in training, but if he is the type to crumble under immense pressure then he should not be taking one.

In a shootout, you want your most confident men taking the kicks, no matter who they are.
