Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has praised Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder was rewarded with a new long-term contract earlier this week.

The academy graduate has been a key figure since the Argentinian was appointed at Elland Road and a failure to win promotion last season prompted speculation this summer that Phillips would leave.

However, he committed his future to the club by signing a five-year deal and speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post today, his manager made it clear that it's something he warrants.

"It's very good for him, he deserves it and it's very good also for the club and of course very good for the team as well - he is very deserving of it. He is a player who has developed a lot, he defends well. He moves the ball really well and he can grow a lot more."

The 23-year-old is sure to start on Sunday as the Whites take on Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, knowing they could potentially move back into the automatic promotion spots with a win.

The verdict

Phillips is sure to appreciate these words from someone like Bielsa and it shows that the manager recognises the importance of the midfielder to the team.

And, there's no doubt that Phillips did deserve his new deal and it was a real coup for the Championship club that they managed to keep hold of the player.

Now, it's about building on that though and ensuring the local lad is enjoying the second year of his new contract with the side in the Premier League.
