Leeds United manager has claimed that Gaetano Berardi is capable of playing anywhere across the back line, as well as in midfield.

In a tweet by sports journalist Phil Hay, the Lilywhites boss stated that the 29-year-old, who is a default full back, has impressed since appearing in the middle of defence in the absence of an injured Pontus Jansson.

The tweet stated: “Bielsa talking about Berardi. Says he feels Berardi can play in any defensive position and that he's been happy with his performances at centre-back so far. #lufc”.

Leeds United have had the perfect start to the season, gaining nine points from their opening three Championship fixtures, as well as a victory in the first round of the Football League Cup against Bolton Wanderers.

Berardi, who has been on the books at Elland Road since the summer of 2014, has made over 100 appearances for Leeds United, scoring on just one occasion.

But, it is his impressive defensive displays that have got him the nod in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting line-up so far this season.

The Verdict

Bielsa has started the season better than even he could have hoped for, with a perfect record in the Championship to date, with three wins out of three.

Gaetano Berardi has been somewhat of a revelation this season, showing great potential in the middle of the defensive line.

With Jansson still not fit to start for Leeds United, Berardi could just have found himself a new position.
