Marcelo Bielsa has admitted that he wanted Lewis Baker to remain a Leeds United player for the remainder of the season and beyond, after news emerged that Chelsea are looking to recall the midfielder.

Leeds have used Baker sparingly so far this season in the Championship, with the 23-year-old limited to just two starts in the league, which ended with him substituted at half-time.

Now, reports from the Yorkshire Evening Post have confirmed that Baker will be returning to Chelsea ahead of a loan move elsewhere in the Championship.

Phil Hay from the YEP has brought Bielsa’s thoughts on the stance Chelsea have taken.

“It's not official yet but I think it's true. It was something in the contract and obviously Chelsea and Baker chose to use that to go back,” the 63-year-old said.

"He was always inside the group, even if he didn't play a lot. Maybe he felt that we didn't value him at the right level.

“The only time I talked to him about it, not only did I tell him I wanted him to stay for the next six months but even next year."

Baker’s imminent departure from Leeds leaves Bielsa agonisingly short of options in midfield, something that he will surely look to address over the course of January.

Samu Saiz’s sudden departure earlier in the month dealt Leeds their first blow, whilst Baker’s expected move will pile the pressure on Izzy Brown, who is still yet to make a senior appearance for the Whites.

Brown last featured in a competitive game almost 12 months ago for Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Verdict

Bielsa might not have given Baker much game time, but he clearly admired the player and wanted him to stick around.

The state of Leeds’ squad right now is worrying, with injuries and departed players limiting Bielsa’s options.

He can’t dwell on losing Baker, he must replace him.
