Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa insists he is to blame after the Whites fell to a surprising defeat at home to Wigan yesterday.

The visitors have been awful on the road this season, so when they had a man sent off and Patrick Bamford had given Bielsa's men the lead after just 17 minutes, a home win seemed inevitable.

Yet, the Latics stood firm and a double from Gavin Massey secured the unlikeliest of victories.

Even though the hosts had all the pressure, they were wasteful in possession and didn't create as many clear opportunities as they would've expected.

Supporters also questioned Bielsa's decision to take off Kalvin Phillips and Tyler Roberts at half-time, with Adam Forshaw and Kemar Roofe not making much difference after the break.

And, the Argentinian told the Yorkshire Evening Post that the poor result was down to him.

"There's no point in me giving any explanation because the result tells a lot about me and seriously condemns my work. You have no explanation which could justify a loss like this.

"The players have the duty to give everything and be ambitious. When you have these ingredients - ambition, effort and commitment - and you don’t get what you’re looking for, it’s not the responsibility of the players. It’s the responsibility of the head coach."

Leeds dropped to third as a result and travel to take on Brentford on Easter Monday.

The Verdict

This is very good from Bielsa as he is trying to take the pressure of his players as they have another huge test in two days time.

Whilst he has to take his fair share of the blame, the team will know they didn't do enough either.

It was a bad day all-round and it could be decisive in the race for automatic promotion but they have to concentrate on bouncing back at Griffin Park now.
