Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has praised captain Liam Cooper for his leadership qualities after the defender celebrated 100 games as skipper on Saturday.

The former Chesterfield man has established himself as a key player for the Whites this season in what has been a superb campaign so far.

As well as performing to a high level, the 27-year-old has clearly made a positive impression on Bielsa for how he handles the responsibility of being captain.

"You can't find a better professional than him. He feels love for his profession, apart from the fact that it's his job. He is generous and he prioritises the needs of his team-mates before his own. He's always willing to help," the manager was quoted by reporter Phil Hay.

Cooper has been crucial as Leeds have kept back-to-back clean sheets recently, with the 1-0 success over Bristol City on Saturday ensuring the side remain in the automatic promotion places.

The centre-back is sure to start as Bielsa's men prepare to take on Reading at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow night.

The Verdict

Cooper will really appreciate these comments from Bielsa and it shows how valued he is as captain by the manager.

There is clearly a good atmosphere at the club, with a strong spirit in the dressing room and the defender obviously plays an important role in building that.

Now, it's about maintaining the high standards the side have set for the final few months of what could be a memorable season.
