These are exciting times at Mansfield Town.

With some real investment and some decent transfer business over the summer, the Stags look like they could be genuine promotion contenders this season as they aim to go up to League One.

Steve Evans has come in as manager and brought in a number of top players but he is still looking for one more striker.

After missing out on Sheffield United target man James Hanson, Evans will be scouring the market for other options.

Mansfield Town currently have Lee Angol, Jimmy Spencer and Danny Rose as their three strikers but Evans wants one more to increase competition for places up front.

Mansfield should look at non-league star Dave Tarpey as a wildcard choice.

Maidenhead United forward Dave Tarpey is a fine goal scorer and deserves a shot in the Football League.

The route of non-league football into the Football League is proving more popular and age is no barrier.

You just have to look at the likes of Ricky Miller (Dover to Peterborough) and Danny Newton (Tamworth to Stevenage) to see that some players are reaching their peak at later stages in their career.

Dave Tarpey could be the next to make that step up.

The 29-year-old set a new record in the National League South, scoring a remarkable 45 goals as Maidenhead were promoted from the sixth tier to the National League.

Many questioned whether Tarpey could step up and continue scoring goals in the National League but he has shown that he can.

Tarpey netted four times against AFC Fylde in a 4-1 win for Maidenhead to bring his tally to 7 in just 4 games - two more than anyone else in the division.

If Mansfield brought Tarpey in and he keeps netting goals, then they could well be winning automatic promotion by next May.
