Mansfield Town have received a fee in the region of £250,000 for the services of their former manager Steve Evans who departed to join Peterborough United at the start of March.

BBC Radio Nottingham has confirmed the news via Twitter and it is to be believed that the fee is much higher than figures reported previously.

Evans had led the Stags into the top three of League Two but opted to join the Posh due to a long-term affection for the club who are in the league above Mansfield.

Evans has hit the ground running at London Road securing two wins during his first three games in charge, whilst his replacement at One Call Stadium, David Flitcroft, has remained unbeaten in his first three games at Mansfield drawing all three 1-1.

The Stags remain firmly in the hunt to secure an automatic promotion place come the end of the campaign and it is fair to say that Evans has left the club in pretty decent shape.

The Verdict

This news will naturally delight those of a Stags persuasion as it means the club are rewarded with a decent amount of compensation for just over a year’s service from Evans.

Although his departure at a critical time of the campaign will leave a sour taste in some fans’ mouths, the sad fact of modern day football is that money unfortunately talks.

The one aspect of this conclusion that will delight Stags supporters, however, is that the money can now potentially be used to bolster Flitcroft’s playing squad ahead of next season regardless of what league the club is in.
