Barnsley are on a very worrying run of form that has seen them lose five games in a row, scoring only one goal in the process.

It leaves the Tykes in 20th position and just four points ahead of the relegation zone, with many fans believing the January window will be key for Paul Heckingbottom’s men to climb up the table.

Clearly, reinforcements are desperately needed at Oakwell but once again the Yorkshire club may have to contend with bigger clubs taking their players, with Andy Yiadom linked with a move to the Premier League.

Nevertheless, Heckingbottom will be focused on bringing players in to ensure Barnsley can get away from trouble as quickly as possible and here are five targets we believe he should work on signing…

Danny Newton

A graduate of Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy, the striker has worked his way into the EFL after scoring for fun with Tamworth.

Whilst the goals have been harder to come by with Stevenage, the 26-year old does boast a decent record and has the quality to step up.

Barnsley are a great platform for unproven players to get a chance and Heckingbottom could get the best out of Newton in the Championship.

Axel Tuanzebe

There’s no doubt that Barnsley need to improve defensively and the Manchester United man would enhance their options at the back.

A loan deal might benefit the player as it will give him regular football which could help his development and it would certainly help the Tykes.

Strong, quick and competitive, Tuanzebe could excel in the Championship.

Devante Cole

The Fleetwood striker and son of Manchester United favourite Andrew looks a very good player.

Quick and with good movement, Cole is a handful for any defence and is capable of playing at a higher level.

There will be competition for his signature but the Tykes would be a good place for Cole to continue his development.

Josh Tymon

The youngster made a breakthrough for Hull last season under Marco Silva and looked very promising, however it hasn’t worked out since he moved to Stoke.

The left-back can’t get near the first-team and would benefit from a loan move.

He would bring more quality to the Tykes team and needs game time.

Jiri Skalak

The Czech winger, who can play either side, was an important figure for Brighton as they won promotion last season, but he can’t get a game this season.

Given that, Brighton will be prepared to let him go and Barnsley could be the beneficiaries.

Skilful and with great delivery, Skalak could bring the creativity that is currently missing from the Tykes team.
