Manchester United stance could impact Barnsley managerial vacancy

Manchester United are keen to keep highly rated coach Eric Ramsay at the club.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are hoping to ward off interest from Barnsley to keep the coach at the club.

Barnsley have been linked with appointing the 30-year old as their next head coach.

The current member of the Red Devils’ backroom staff is one of the names on the Tykes’ shortlist to replace Poya Asbaghi.

The Iranian was dismissed in April following confirmation that the club had been relegated from the Championship.

As Barnsley now prepare for life in League One, a number of names ranging from Ramsay to Neil Warnock have been mentioned as possible appointments.

However, new Man United manager Erik ten Hag is keen to work with the former Chelsea staffer.

Ramsay joined Old Trafford last summer from the Blues and was appointed the first team squad’s set piece coach.

Barnsley signed Devante Cole from a Scottish club

Following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer midway through the campaign, the future of the backroom staff was left unclear.

But it is now believed that Man United see a bright future for Ramsay at the club so will attempt to ward off any interest from the third division side.

The Verdict

If Ramsay was appointed he would be the second Man United coach to take over a League One side in the last 12 months, with Kieran McKenna currently at Ipswich Town.

There has been a lot of turnover in that period at the club, but ten Hag has now brought in Steve McLaren and Mitchell van der Gaag as part of his new-look backroom staff.

This would be an interesting appointment for Barnsley if they do manage to bring Ramsay to the club.

His previous experience also includes a stint in charge at Shrewsbury Town, as well as a period working in the Swansea City youth academy.

Ramsay is certainly highly rated and would bring elite level experience to Oakwell if appointed.
