Premier League giants Manchester United are set to table a January bid for Walsall defender Rico Henry, a source close to the Saddlers has confirmed to Football League World.

The 18-year-old left-back has been in superb form this season and he has established himself as one of the most promising youngsters outside of the Premier League.

He has been a crucial part of the Saddlers' terrific start to the season, and FLW have been informed by the source that a number of clubs are monitoring the England under-19 international.

Manchester United have a history of recruiting young players from the Football League and they are hoping to make Henry the latest youngster to arrive at Old Trafford.

With an serious injury picked up by let-back Luke Shaw earlier this season, Louis van Gaal is on the lookout for a new left-sided defender and Henry could find himself in contention for a place in the first team should he move to Manchester.

Walsall are currently third in League One and although they lost their manager, Dean Smith, to Championship side Brentford, they will hope to be promoted to the second tier this season.
