According to reports in the Italian media, Manchester United are set to rival Lazio in the battle to sign Middlesbrough star Marten de Roon.

Manchester United are keen on making a move for Middlesbrough's Marten de Roon this summer as they aim to add to their midfield ranks, according to an exclusive report by Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato Web.

Following Middlesbrough's relegation to the Championship, Marten de Roon has been attracting attention from other clubs.

Boro are keen to keep the central midfielder at the Riverside Stadium for their Championship campaign but face a real battle with a number of interested parties.

Serie A duo Atalanta and Lazio are two clubs being linked with a move.

Atalanta sold de Roon to Boro last summer but want him back already while Lazio are ready to make a swoop for the Dutchman.

The 26-year-old is also on the radar of Manchester United.

The Red Devils parted ways with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin last season so they might be looking for reinforcements in the holding midfield area.

Marten de Roon, who has formerly played for Sparta Rotterdam, Heerenveen and Atalanta, is seen as a possible addition.

The once-capped Netherlands international would cost about €12m, according to this report by Tutto Mercato Web.

Lazio have already seen a €8m bid rejected in the past few days.
