Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has suggested that the 2019/20 season should be made null and void if it is not able to be completed.

All English professional football has been suspended until further notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reports have suggested that there are initial plans being prepared that could see the season return behind closed doors at the start of June but given the current global crisis, it is impossible to predict whether or not that will be the case.

Few teams will be more desperate to see the season get back underway and completed than Leeds United, who are top of the Championship and look on course to end their 16-year absence from the English top flight.

Marcelo Bielsa's men are seven points clear of the play-off places with nine games left of the season and were in fantastic form before the delay, winning five in a row in the Championship.

Speaking during the FIFA 20 Combat Corona fundraiser for Unicef on Twitch, Shaw suggested that the season should be scrapped if it cannot be properly finished.

He said (via Leeds Live): "Scrap it and start again. Start it again.

“It’s got to be. If we can’t carry it on, it’s got to be void.”

The concept of behind closed doors games does not seem to appeal to him either.

He noted (via Leeds Live): "Fans are so important. You realise it even more [now].

"The sport is for fans really … if you don’t have fans, and you don’t play in front of fans, it just doesn’t feel right.

“Especially on matchday the fans are always amazing and always help the team. Whether it’s home or even away our fans are always brilliant and I feel like they’re always there with us."

It was reported by The Athletic earlier this week that FIFA is set to announce that the 2019/20 campaign will be extended until it can be completed and not abandoned or cancelled.

The Verdict

Leeds fans may be left absolutely furious comments from Shaw, who is suggesting their promotion chances are pulled away from them with just nine games left of the current campaign.

Recent reports appear to have suggested that won't be the case, however, until anything is confirmed you imagine the Whites will remain on edge about the situation.

The defender's comments are only likely to make the dislike between the two clubs stronger.

Leeds will be hoping they can face their historic rivals twice in the Premier League next season.
