League One side Southend United have completed the signing of Manchester United midfielder Ethan Hamilton on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old is yet to make a first-team appearance for Manchester United, but has been included on the bench before and spent the second half of last season on loan in League One with Rochdale.

The midfielder was able to make an intimidate impact for the Dale - scoring a spectacular goal on his debut against Peterborough United - and went on to score four goals in 14 appearances.

Hamilton will wear the number 16 shirt at Roots Hall and could make his debut for his new club against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank tomorrow.

Southend are currently 22nd in the League One table after losing both of their opening two matches against Coventry City and Blackpool.

The Shrimpers did pick up their first win of the new campaign in midweek, coming from behind to win 2-1 at Stevenage in the first round of the EFL Cup.

The Verdict

This could be a very good signing for Southend.

Hamilton is an exciting young player - he wouldn't be at a top club like Manchester United unless they thought he had the potential to be a special talent.

There was no way he was going to get a chance in the first team at Old Trafford this season though, so it makes perfect sense for him to go out on loan and it will allow him to gain some valuable first-team experience.

He's already got some experience in League One with Rochdale, so he should be able to make an impact at Southend straight away.

He will provide the Shrimpers with more energy and intensity in midfield and Southend fans will be hoping for him to make a similar impact to what he did at Rochdale.
