Salford City are closing in on their fifth January signing with Manchester United right back George Tanner likely to arrive at the Peninsula Stadium later today.

Tanner has featured 17 times in League Two already for basement club Morecambe, but has been recalled by the Premier League club and now looks set to join Salford City on loan until the end of the season.

The Daily Mail reported on Thursday afternoon that Wigan Athletic and an unnamed MLS side are interested in Tanner, but it seems that Salford have won the race for the 20-year-old's signature.

Salford currently sit 11 points of the League Two play-off places in 13th place and now look set to add their fifth January signing to their side.

The 20-year-old's contract with Manchester United is up this summer and it could be likely that the defender joins Salford on a permanent deal in the summer.

It is expected that a decision on Tanner's next destination will be expected later on today.

Should the deal happen, Tanner will most likely miss the registration period to play against Oldham Athletic on Saturday but could be in contention for Salford's next game at Cambridge on Tuesday.

The Verdict

Salford certainly aren't messing around this transfer window with Tanner likely to become their fifth signing.

Tanner has 17 League Two appearances to his name and will provide Graham Alexander with another option at right back.

Should the 20-year-old choose Salford as his next destination it will certainly show Salford's ambition as they look set to beat off Championship side Wigan to his signature.

The deal will also give Salford the upper hand in the summer when Tanner's contract at Manchester United comes to an end, giving Graham Alexander's side the upper hand for a potential permanent deal.
