Tranmere Rovers have announced that defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been recalled from his loan spell at Prenton Park by parent club Manchester United.

Borthwick-Jackson had joined the League One side on a season-long loan late in the summer transfer window, but the 22-year-old's time at the club has now come to an end.

It would ultimately prove to be a frustrating spell on Merseyside for the Manchester United youngster, who made a total of just six appearances in all competitions for Tranmere during the first half of the season, starting just one league game for Micky Mellon's side.

The defender has now returned to United, for whom he has made a total of 14 appearances, and it remains to be seen what his next move will be.

Borthwick-Jackson leaves Tranmere with the club currently 21st in the League One standings, three points adrift of safety.

The Verdict

It looks as though this is probably the best move for United to make with regards to Borthwick-Jackson.

At 22-years-old, the defender needs to be playing as much as possible in order to develop to a stage where he can play at the very top for a club such as United, and he simply wasn't getting those opportunities at Tranmere.

Given those struggles, it would be a surprise to see Borthwick-Jackson thrust into the United starting XI from here, despite their own defensive problems recently.

Consequentially, another loan in search of more game time could be useful for the defender now, and it will be interesting to see just where he finds himself come the start of February.
