Premier League champions Manchester City are set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Millwall youngster Samuel Edozie, according to reports from the Evening Standard.

The Manchester club have really improved their academy set-up since being taken over in 2008, producing the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho over the last few years, and turning them into superstars.

With Pep Guardiola's side on the hunt for new, upcoming talent, it is believed that the Citizens are set to fight off compettion from Chelsea, and complete the signing of Millwall starlet Edozie.

The Nigerian, who plays primarily as a winger, is highly regarded by those at The Den, and has made several appearances for the club's under-18 side despite being two years younger than most of his teammates.

The 16-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for Neil Harris' side, and whilst the club want to keep hold of Edozie and develop him into a better player, a move to a club like City may be too much for the player to turn down.

The Verdict

It's disappointing for Millwall to lose one of their most prized assets, but unfortunately that's the way football is nowadays, especially when a massive club like City come knocking.

Edozie looks to be a real talent who has certainly caught the eye of plenty of high-profile clubs, and Guardiola will be hoping that he turns out as good as Sancho.

It's a longshot, of course, but with years of coaching and hard work, who knows?
