Swansea City are set to complete the signing of Manchester City winger Liam Smith, Evening Standard journalist Nizaar Kinsella has reported.

Smith joined Manchester City's academy ranks back in the summer of 2020, following an extended spell at youth level with his boyhood club Kilmarnock.

However, the 19-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the reigning Premier League champions, and it now seems he could leave the Etihad, without doing so.

According to this latest update, Smith is now set to join Swansea on a permanent basis, and is currently undergoing a medical with the Championship club, ahead of completing that move.

If confirmed, Smith, who has been capped by Scotland at Under 17 and Under 19 level, could become Swansea's first signing of the January transfer window.

Russell Martin's side currently sit 12th in the Championship table, three points adrift of the play-off places.

The Verdict

This does feel like a rather interesting piece of business for Swansea to get done.

After what has been a quiet window so far, there will undoubtedly be a desire for some signings at the club, and attacking reinforcements could certainly be useful.

However, the fact that Smith has yet to play any senior football, means you do question whether he will be ready to go straight into the high demands of the Championship, once he completes this move.

With that in mind, he could be one for the future, and his career so far suggests he has the potential for that, but with regards to the current window, you would expect there will be a desire for more around Swansea.
