Doncaster Rovers are in pole position to sign Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith on loan, according to Football Insider.

Smith spent last season away from the Etihad Stadium on loan, spending the season on loan in the Sky Bet Championship.

The 20-year-old made 10 appearances for Queens Park Rangers in the first-half of the season, before making two appearances for Charlton Athletic on loan at the Valley in the second-half of the campaign.

The 7 question Doncaster Rovers quiz – Can you get all 7 correct?

1 of 7

Who scored Doncaster's first goal of the 2019/20 season?

Smith looks set to be sent out on loan by City once again this season, after giving the midfielder the green light to go out on loan with Championship and League One sides said to be chasing him.

According to Football Insider, League One side Doncaster Rovers are now in pole position to sign Smith on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Donny will have aspirations of finishing in the play-offs and fighting for promotion this term, with Darren Moore’s side picking up seven points from their first four league games.

It remains to be seen what Smith’s impending arrival means for Ben Whiteman, who has recently been the subject of a seven-figure bid from Barnsley.

The Verdict

This is somewhat of a coup for Doncaster.

Smith spent last season on loan in the Championship and impressed in the second-tier, so I am surprised to see him drop down to League One.

Donny may have to sign another midfielder if Whiteman leaves before this afternoon’s transfer deadline, and Smith would be a ready-made replacement.
