It's probably fair to say that this season hasn't quite gone how Tosin Adarabioyo would have expected it to so far.

Having joined Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan from Premier League champions Manchester City during the summer transfer window, Adarabioyo will surely have been expecting to enjoy plenty of game time, in order to further improve his ability at a high level of football, and maybe even catch the attention of the likes of Pep Guardiola at his parent club.

But if that was indeed Adarabioyo's plan, things certainly haven't gone the way the centre back will have wanted them to.

So far this season, a combination of fitness problems for the 22-year-old, and the strength of the pre-established partnership of Republic of Ireland duo Derrick Williams and Darragh Lenihan at the centre of Blackburn's defence have limited Adarabioyo to just two starts for the club.

While that is something that will undoubtedly be a source of frustration for Adarabioyo, the centre back will now feel that that situation is about to change.

After Lenihan limped out of Rovers' 4-2 defeat away to QPR in their final game before the international break, the club have now confirmed that the defender is set to miss the next six-eight weeks of the season with a knee injury.

That is something that - given his clear importance to Rovers' improved defensive performances this season - will undoubtedly be a concern to the vast majority of those around Ewood Park, although Adarabioyo himself will surely see this as the opportunity he has been waiting for.

Having stepped in for Lenihan the only other time the defender has failed to start a league game this season - in a 2-0 defeat at Fulham in the second week of the campaign - and having come off the bench to replace him at QPR, Adarabioyo will surely be confident that this will be his moment to step forward for Rovers.

If that is indeed the case, then you feel there may be some slightly mixed emotions for Adarabioyo.

On the one hand, there will inevitably be nerves, and understandably so. This looks as though it is going to be his first big chance to really stake a claim for his starting spot of his own in Blackburn's XI over a run of games, which could also give him the opportunity to catch the eye at his parent club.

Add to that the fact that the first of those games - at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday - is set to be broadcast on Sky Sports, and it does seem as though the pressure will be on for Adarabioyo.

That however, is something he should be confident of dealing with. As a result of Lenihan's injury, it looks almost certain that he will be playing alongside Derrick Williams in the centre of Rovers' backline, the same player he has looked solid when linking up in his past handful of appearances for Blackburn, meaning this is not completely uncharted territory for the 22-year-old.

Add to that the fact that he does already have experience at a strong Championship level - having helped West Brom reach the play-offs during a loan spell at The Hawthorns last season - and you imagine Adarabioyo will be backing himself to make an impact over the next few weeks, especially in a Blackburn side who finished 15th in the second-tier last season.

While the loss of Lenihan does look to be significant one for Rovers, it is also one that presents an opportunity in the form of the chance it looks set to offer to Adarabioyo.

On the basis of what has gone before, it does seem to be a chance that he should be more than ready to take, and if he does, then Lenihan's absence may not end up being quite as big a miss as first feared.
