Aston Villa target Ciaran Clark’s future has been cleared up by Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez.

The defender has been linked with a return to last season’s defeated play-off finalists, as manager Steve Bruce looks to add defensive reinforcements to his side ahead of the loan window closing on August 31.

The 28-year-old has been a vital part of the Magpies’ side since 2016.

And, the Newcastle boss has moved quickly to dismiss the links between Clark and Villa.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s round of games, Benitez told the Shields Gazette: "We have some players that need time on the pitch.

"But players playing already, we cannot allow anyone to go."

Clark played the whole game of Newcastle’s opening day Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

And a move back to Villa looks less likely after this admission from the Newcastle boss.

The Verdict

It is a shame the Championship side can’t make a move happen as Clark would add plenty of experience to their defensive ranks.

Bruce has been eyeing a move for an experienced defender since the departure of skipper John Terry over the summer.

It will be a blow to miss out on their former defender, but he has been a critical player for Newcastle over the past two seasons and looks set to remain in their side heading further into the campaign, too.
