Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton says that he would "love" to sign on loan Stoke defender Harry Souttar permanently, but admits he doesn't think Potters boss Nathan Jones would see it the same way.

Souttar has made eight appearances since moving on loan to Highbury in January, and made his debut for Australia's Under 23 side during the March international break, despite having previously appeared for Scotland at both Under 17 and Under 19 level.

Speaking about the prospect of keeping Souttar at Fleetwood in his pre match press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to local rivals Accrington Stanley, Barton revealed: "I'd love to sign Harry Souttar, but I think Nathan Jones would have something to say about that. We have given Harry an opportunity to play football and he has been excellent for us."

Prior to his loan move to Fleetwood, Souttar had made two senior appearances for Stoke, both coming in the opening round of the League Cup in each of the past two seasons.

The verdict

Keeping Souttar would be a huge boost for Fleetwood. The centre back has been a solid part of The Cod Army's defence since his arrival, and it is easy to see why Barton is so keen to keep him.

Stoke however could look for a reset in the summer following an underwhelming first season back in the Championship, and following a string of impressive performances, Nathan Jones may consider making Souttar a part of that.
