Reading manager Jose Gomes has ruled out the possibility of on-loan Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia returning to Goodison Park this season.

Virginia joined the Royals on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window and played the first two matches of the campaign.

But after making some high-profile mistakes early in his time at the club, the 19-year-old has dropped out of the starting lineup in favour of another summer signing in the form of Rafael Cabral, who joined from Italian side Sampdoria.

Despite the expectation that Virginia would return in midweek for Reading's League Cup tie with Plymouth Argyle, it was fellow 'keeper Sam Walker to be given the responsibility between the posts.

That had led to speculation that Virginia could return to Everton in order to be sent out to another club on loan, although Gomes appears to have ruled that out.

Asked about the possibility of Virginia leaving the Madejski Stadium this season, the Royals boss told Berkshire Live: "He is our player so I don't think this can happen.

"I think we are stronger with him than if we let him go."

Prior to the move to Reading, Virginia had yet to make an appearance in senior football, with his experience restricted to game time in the youth ranks at Everton.

The Verdict

I think this is a good thing for both Reading and Virginia.

As Gomes says, the departure of Virginia would arguably leave Reading short of options between the posts, so it makes sense to keep him available should Rafael suffer from injury or suspension.

It is also worth noting that, despite his difficult start to the season, Virginia clearly has the potential to perform at this level, as indicated by his recruitment by a club the size of Everton.

You also feel that this could benefit from Virginia, since it will give him the experience of competing for his place in a senior side, something he may have to become accustomed to doing throughout the course of his career.
