Grant McCann has continued to praise Mallik Wilks, highlighting the on loan Leeds United forward’s development since moving to Doncaster Rovers.

Leeds opted to send Wilks out on loan for the third time in his short career during the summer, with Doncaster taking a chance on the forward until January.

And, the 19-year-old is impressing, scoring six goals and registering three assists in his 21 League One appearances so far this season.

Two of those goals came on Saturday for Doncaster in their 4-0 victory over Bristol Rovers.

Following his latest outing, McCann was quick to discuss his teenage striker.

“Mallik has been brilliant since he came to the football club,” McCann told the Sheffield Star.

“Yes, I still have to speak to him a hell of a lot, more than any other player. But he likes that.

“He knows he’s really highly thought of here.

“He’s grown. Even when he was out of the team.”

Doncaster have the benefit of Wilks’ service until January 2, when the striker will return to Leeds.

It remains to be seen where the 19-year-old spends the second-half of the season, with a chance in Leeds’ setup seemingly unlikely.

The Championship promotion contenders have 10-goal Kemar Roofe, Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts as options.

The Verdict

Wilks is progressing nicely at Doncaster and this is an encouraging update from McCann, who seems to be a manager getting the best out of the player.

For a 19-year-old, Wilks is scoring a lot of goals and proving to be a great option for the League One side.

His age means he has lots of time to develop into a first-team player at Leeds, which too, is really exciting for the Whites.
