Lee Bowyer has played down reports linking 22-year-old midfielder Joe Aribo with a move to Premier League side Arsenal, claiming the player is keen on remaining with the Addicks.

It was reported in the Daily Star yesterday that Aribo is a target for the Gunners, as well as European pair Frankfurt and Benfica.

His Charlton contract is expiring and as yet, he hasn't pledged his future to the club.

Bowyer answered the speculation this morning, delighted that his player is being mentioned in connection with such illustrious clubs, but also pointing the finger of blame for the rumours firmly in one direction.

“If it’s true then it’s good on our behalf. It means the job we are doing with him is a good job," he told the South London Press and Mercury. “But I think it’s his agent, if I’m honest. I’m not reading too much into that."

He revealed that talks between him and the former Staines Town man had started and that he believes his star player wants to remain at the Valley to continue his development.

“I spoke to Joe last week, I had a meeting with him. He wants to sign and I think it’s just trying to agree with his agent. Joe likes it here. He’s learning and improving – that’s all you can say. He knows this is a good place for him to be. The lad is improving lots.”

Aribo has played 86 times for Charlton since his 2015 move from non-league, but has impressed significantly this season as they've climbed into a play-off spot. They remain in 5th place, seemingly set for a two-legged semi-final with a ten point cushion in the top six.

The Verdict

Aribo is a special talent, but where will he be best served? On training pitches playing Under 23 football, or learning on the job in League One?

If Charlton are promoted he could well be a second-tier player and that would certainly be a level which he would thrive in.

He's going to be best served staying put.
