The news won't bother Wolves fans all that much having recently secured their promotion, but it has emerged today that their club missed out on one of their summer transfer targets.

24-year old Dutch striker Jurgen Locadia had attracted their interest in the summer, with PSV Eindhoven technical manager Marcel Brands today confirming that they had a bid turned down.

The player is now with Premier League Brighton having secured his move in January, scoring twice in his first two games for the Seagulls. He's turned out six times in all, but it could have been very different had Wolves got their way.

As reported on Dutch site Voetbalzone, it was the thought of dropping into the Championship that put the player off a Molineux switch.

Brands said: “First came Wolverhampton Wanderers in the afternoon, they wanted to pay €11m (£9.5m), but Locadia hesitated about the Championship. At six o’clock Brighton came back, but he’d been taken off the market.”

Half a season and nine goals later, the price had risen to £14m, the figure that Brighton eventually paid to take him to the South Coast.

The Verdict

History has yet to tell Jurgen Locadia whether he made the right move or not, but if the last few months are anything to go by he may be spending next season looking up at what might have been.

If only Brighton had been quicker in the summer, then could have saved themselves a cool £5m. Hopefully, the investment will prove to be a wise one in the long term.
