QPR head to Birmingham on Saturday knowing defeat will leave them firmly in a relegation battle over the festive period.

A loss to Leeds last time out made it five defeats in six and has left fans nervously looking over their shoulder. Next up, they face Blues, who occupy the final relegation spot and are six points behind Ian Holloway's men.

The R's form suggests that even with a win it could be a long hard season and whilst they've not been helped by rotten luck on the injury front, there are serious weaknesses in the squad.

Goals are hard to come by and clean sheets are rare, which combines to make January a critical month for Holloway.

However, the financial situation at the club means he will have to look for bargains and loan signings to bolster his team.

Still, it could be a busy month at Loftus Road and here are five players that QPR should target...

Jack Marriott

Holloway has tried to build a young, hungry and energetic squad and the Peterborough forward would fit into that category.

Marriott has been prolific in League One this season and knows where the back of the net is, which is more than can be said for many current QPR forwards.

They'll face strong competition to bring him in, but the team needs goals and Marriott scores them, so he has to be someone they make a real big effort to sign.

Danny Newton

The Stevenage striker is a graduate of Jamie Vardy's V9 Academy and only moved to the League Two club this season after scoring for fun with Tamworth.

Newton has settled in to life in the EFL with ease and is already attracting Championship interest.

QPR are one of those looking and he would fit with the identity that Holloway is trying to create and would be within their price range.

James Wilson

QPR need goals and James Wilson is a great finisher.

The Manchester United man will be available in January and will be desperate to prove a point after so long out injured.

He will get regular games at Loftus Road which may appeal to the player and he could form a good partnership with Matt Smith if given the chance.

Axel Tuanzebe

Another Old Trafford youngster that Holloway could move for is Axel Tuanzebe.

The 20-year old is a strong defender and QPR are very short in that area. His pace and strength should mean he adapts to the Championship with ease and it could really benefit his development.

Jack Robinson has been forced to play centre-back at times so Tuanzebe would be a real upgrade for the Londoners.

Tosin Adarabioyo

Alternatively, QPR could go across to the blue half of Manchester in their search for a centre-back.

Tosin Adarabioyo is highly regarded by the staff at City but game time is highly unlikely this season. Playing regularly for the R's could aid his progress and that would come in the Championship.

At 6ft 5in he is perfectly capable of dealing with the physical side of the league and would be a key man for Holloway if he could tempt him to Loftus Road.
