Last season in the Sky Bet Championship, Leeds United went close in their quest for play-off football and an opportunity to challenge for a place back in the Premier League. Ultimately their challenge fell short, and Thomas Christiansen is looking to go one better this year.

Leeds’ business in the January transfer window was not good enough last season, and their lack of quality showed during the run-in, as they slipped agonisingly short of a top-six finish. This year, Christiansen’s decisions in January could be key to securing a place in May’s play-offs.

Here at FLW, we believe it will be vital that Leeds strengthen their attacking options, with the goals of Chris Wood not yet properly replaced. Pierre-Michel Lasogga has done well, but there is too much pressure on the on-loan German to deliver.

One player Leeds could look to sign is January is James Wilson, who is struggling for a first-team opportunity with the Whites’ bitter rivals, Manchester United. Wilson has admitted he is open to a move away from Old Trafford in January, as he looks to improve his fitness after a serious knee injury.

Wilson has made an impressive impact when featuring for Man United’s first-team, but has also spent time away from his parent-club, with the 21-year-old featuring for Brighton and Hove Albion and Derby County in the Championship.

The striker has just nine senior goals to his name, but has plenty of potential and would add another dimension to Leeds’ attack in January. Wilson would undoubtedly get game time at Elland Road, whilst Leeds would be benefitting from a striker with a point to prove.

Christiansen has started the season well, and despite a late slump in form, Leeds are currently sixth. If the Whites are still in promotion contention in early 2018, the addition of Wilson could seriously boost their chance of ending a 14 year wait for a Premier League return.
