Manchester United and Liverpool are two clubs paying a close interest in Birmingham City's exciting youngster Romello Mitchell, according to the Daily Mail.

He featured for the Blues Under 16 side yesterday, scoring as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, but it may be that he's soon swapping the Championship for the bright lights of the Premier League. As interest in first team striker Che Adams intensifies, it seems he may not be the only current Birmingham player on the radar of big clubs.

Mitchell has only just turned 16, but has been impressing in the Under 18 side this season, as well as helping the Under 16s to the Blades Cup final. He scored twice as they beat Liverpool 8-4, alerting the Merseyside giants to his skills.

Having already despatched Manchester United in the semi final, it seems both clubs were impressed enough to keep an eye on Mitchell.

Another of the Blues youth products, Jude Bellingham, also shone in those two matches, scoring four past Liverpool in the final. Both players could move clubs for a modest compensation fee because of their age.

The Verdict

With transfer fees rising in the top flight all the time, the trick for the big clubs is to find players when they're young and have them hoarded in an academy.

The transfer market is changing rapidly and this farming of youth players is becoming more prevalent as the years roll by. Mitchell would surely be tempted with a switch to the top flight and with youth on his side, he might be best served  making that jump.
