Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has told his podcast, Vibe With FIVE, that rumoured Derby County transfer target Phil Jones is wasting his time by staying at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old centre back has found himself very much out of favour at Old Trafford after picking up a series of injuries and could well be set to depart the Premier League club this summer, with Derby having been linked with the player in the past.
As exclusively reported by Football League World yesterday, the former England international and Premier League winner is said to be open to making a loan move to a Sky Bet Championship side this summer as he remains open to offers.
Now Ferdinand has had his say on his former teammate’s situation with the Red Devils, as he stated the following:
“I remember back in the day you’d have to do some absolute graft to get a new deal. You’d have to be putting in performances, you’d have to be a vital member of the team. Phil Jones isn’t that…
“If I was in the squad with someone like that I wouldn’t talk to them. They are a waste of time, why would I chat to you and give you any energy, taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and go into battle for 90 minutes every week.”

Jones has only made two Premier League appearances since 2019 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and is unlikely to be involved any time in the near future as he looks to rejuvenate his career.
The former Blackburn Rovers defender currently has two years remaining on the contract that he signed just under two years ago.
It is quite crazy to see how big a fall from grace Phil Jones has had since bursting onto the scene at Blackburn and going on to thrive with Man United.
He is clearly in need of a fresh start but at this present moment it is unclear as to whether Derby would be willing to revisit their interest in the defender at this current time.
Jones hasn’t played a lot of football and given his previous injury history, Wayne Rooney may deem a loan move as too much of a risk this season.
Wherever he ends up, Jones will be hoping to play regularly, as he hasn’t had a sustained run of games for the best part of three years.
