Manchester United have reportedly joined Tottenham in the race for Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards following a recommendation from club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 18-year-old made his debut in the Posh's 2020/21 promotion-winning campaign and has featured five times for the Championship club this term – including starting their last three league games.

Earlier in the summer, Football Insider reported that Spurs had set their sights on the defender and had been scouting him in action for the U23s.

According to The Daily Star (via the Daily Express), the Old Trafford outfit have now joined the race for the teenager and are set to battle with the other top-flight clubs in pursuit of him.

It is understood that Sir Alex Ferguson, whose son Darren Ferguson is the Peterborough manager, has been impressed by the centre-back after watching him multiple times and told United's director of football John Murtough to sign him.

The Premier League giants are said to be hopeful that the family link between Sir Alex Ferguson and his son can help them win the race for him.

The Verdict

Edwards' stock continues to rise with United seemingly the latest club in pursuit of him.

With a number of Premier League clubs now in pursuit of him, you do wonder whether his days with the Posh might be numbered.

The Championship club should be able to demand a sizeable fee for the 18-year-old, whose current contract is set to run until 2025.

The defender has impressed since being thrown into the starting XI by Darren Ferguson in recent weeks and certainly looks like a player with a bright future.

It's one worth keeping on an eye on as January approaches.
