Marcelo Bielsa led his Leeds side to a 3-0 win against Preston North end last night, erasing the memory of the League Cup defeat and putting them three points clear at the top of the table.

It was a hard-fought victory in which youngster Tyler Roberts defied the critics to bag a brace, but it also drew a World Cup winner to Twitter to give his thoughts on the situation.

Benjamin Mendy, the France full back who won both the World Cup and the Premier League last season, tweeted his appreciation of his former manager.

He played under Bielsa at Marseille in a spell which saw him develop as a player. Mendy claimed that Bielsa had given him back some of the 'aggressiveness and strength' he had previously lost.

Mendy later moved to Monaco before Manchester City paid £52m for his services.

The Argentinian has clearly been a huge influence on Mendy's career for him to take time out from preparations for tonight's game against Lyon to let his former manager know he still has his backing.

The Verdict

It is nice to see the regard in which Bielsa is held and it must be heartening for the current Leeds players that such a successful individual has benefitted from working with him.

Make no mistake, this is an exciting time to be connected with Leeds, as a player or as a fan. Mendy's response to their win last night only underlines that further.
