When any club is relegated from the Premier League, their instant reaction is: how do we get back there as soon as possible?

It is something that all of last season's relegated sides will be hopeful of doing but if they are to be successful, the one thing they all need is a reliable source of goals.

Stoke City look in great shape for a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, having signed Benik Afobe from Wolves.

This is something that manager Darren Moore is well aware of having made a Championship goalscorer his top priority for the summer.

The latest name to be linked with a move to the Hawthorns is Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle. And, if they do manage to bring in the 27-year old striker it would seriously boost their chances of promotion.

Why?

Gayle has proven multiple times in the past how capable he is of scoring in the second-tier of English football.

In the 2012/13 season, he scored 13 goals in 29 Championship games for Peterborough United before moving to Crystal Palace.

His next spell at that level came in 2016, when he made the move to Newcastle United who had just been relegated. At St. James' Park, Gayle had an even more emphatic season, scoring 23 goals in 32 games.

Therefore, it is hard to believe that he would struggle next season given his past performances.

What must happen

Yet, it may be the case that the Baggies must work harder to sell either Solomon Rondon or Jay Rodriguez in order to fund the move.

Newcastle recently rejected a loan bid from the Baggies as Rafa Benitez does not want to lose a striker on a temporary basis.

Whilst there is no guarantee that Rondon or Rodriguez will perform in the Championship, Dwight Gayle almost definitely would.

Bringing in the 27-year-old would be a major statement from Moore and set them up for an instant return to the Premier League.
