Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has revealed that striker Benik Afobe is in line to return to training next week after stepping up his recovery from a long-term injury.

Afobe has not featured for the Robins since he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury back in September, with the on-loan Stoke striker having scored three goals in his five City appearances prior to this major setback.

The 27-year-old was initially ruled out for the remainder of the season after he sustained the serious problem, but Johnson has now suggested that Afobe's recovery and he could be set to link up with the group again on Monday.

Speaking to Bristol Live, Johnson revealed that Afobe is in a position where he can now take a step forward on his path to recovery, but he conceded that he is not expecting to see the frontman back in first-team action anytime soon.

"He is looking to come back into the group on Monday, I wouldn't expect any sort of Afobe in a match-day shirt yet but what that shows you is he's ready to upgrade his training a little bit on the grass and in the gym," He said.

"That's really positive, both as a lad, good to get him back, he's been a positive supporter of the boys, and it will be great to see him."

City will be hoping Afobe can overcome his injury to play a part for the Robins during their promotion bid this campaign, with the striker set to add yet another attacking option for Johnson following the arrival of Nahki Wells back in January.

The Verdict

This represents a major boost for City given the striker was initially deemed unable to feature again this season, and his potential return would ensure Johnson has a plethora of attacking options during the Championship's final run-in.

Afobe's performances earlier in the campaign served as proof of the kind of goalscoring threat he can provide for the Robins, and his presence in the side would surely mean City have one of the most threatening strike forces in the division.

It is important that City do not rush Afobe back to fitness given the extent of his injury blow, but there can be no doubt his presence would be highly valued by Johnson, while the striker could also then push for a permanent move to the club.
