Cardiff City striker James Collins will have his Derby County medical today ahead of a move to Pride Park, according to Football Insider

The Rams have made impressive progress on their squad rebuild after David Clowes' takeover was completed earlier this month, with the start of the League One season now a little more than a fortnight away.

It appears Derby are now set to make Collins their next summer signing and beat out third tier rivals Portsmouth in the race for him.

Football Insider has reported that the 31-year-old will undergo his medical with the East Midlands club today.

It is understood that the Rams have agreed a deal with Cardiff for the striker, who will sign a two-year deal at Pride Park.

Collins has 12 months left on his contract in the Welsh capital but has fallen out of favour under Steve Morison and did not feature in the recent pre-season friendly against Newport County.

He bagged 72 goals in 183 games for Luton Town before joining the Bluebirds last summer but has struggled since and is set to leave the club with a record of just three goals in 30 appearances.

The Verdict

Today's medical will be a major step toward the completion of the deal and this looks an excellent addition for Derby, who are signing a proven League One goalscorer.

Collins' scored 25 times in his last season in the third tier and will provide Liam Rosenior with some added forward firepower for the 2022/23 campaign.

Pompey were also linked but with the 31-year-old's medical booked in for today and a deal agreed, it appears the Rams have won the race for him.

Assuming they get the move over the line, it will continue their impressive transfer business since the takeover was completed.
