Sheffield Wednesday have had their points deduction reduced from 12 to 6 points, according to ITV's Chris Dawkes.

The Owls started the season on -12 points after being found to have breached the EFL's profit and sustainability rules but Dawkes has reported that punishment has now been reduced.

Wednesday's were found to have breached the rules after they included the sale of Hillsborough in their 2017/18 accounts despite the stadium being sold a year later.

Official confirmation is yet to come through but the reduced points deduction would see Garry Monk's side climb off the bottom of the table for the first time this season and move to within a point of safety.

The Owls ended a run of four-straight losses by beating Bournemouth 1-0 at Hillsborough last night and welcome Millwall to south Yorkshire for their last game before the international break on Saturday.

It was announced earlier this week that Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri will speak to the press tomorrow, which may be in relation to these recent reports.

The Verdict

This is major news for Wednesday and a massive boost to their hopes for the season.

If confirmed, it would see them rise above Wycombe and could see them out of the relegation zone completely by the end of the weekend.

Pressure has been mounting on Monk recently but on the back of this news, a win against Millwall could see him head into the next international break in a relatively strong position.

The purpose of Chansiri's meetings with the press tomorrow have been unclear up to this point but this seems to be the motivation.
