Three Macclesfield Town players have reportedly seeked permission from the EFL to terminate their contracts at the club, as financial troubles persist, according to BBC RM Sport.

The Silkmen’s ongoing financial trouble has been well-documented throughout this season and it has become increasingly more apparent on the field as it affects their matchday squad.

At the start of the season, it was confirmed that Sol Campbell had parted company with the club with mutual consent over disputes on finances. Following the appointment of Daryl McMahon, problems didn’t cease and began to affect all the staff at the club as their wages were paid late and sometimes not at all.

This led to the players and staff threatening to and eventually striking for their FA Cup First-round clash against Kingstonian, which they lost 4-0 as youth players filled the squad.

Around a similar time that McMahon resigned, the club was hit with a six-point deduction over their non-payment of wages and failing to fulfil their fixture against Crewe Alexandra.

The club have now reportedly been hit with further problems as BBC RM Sport have revealed that three players have contacted the EFL over seeking permission to terminate their contracts at Moss Rose as the crisis worsens.

It has not been revealed which players have contacted, but it will most certainly be on the basis that they are still struggling with the non-payment of wages and are seeking a move away.

The verdict

It’s an awful situation currently unfolding at Moss Rose and the quicker they can seal a takeover and rid themselves of these problems that are harming them both on and off the pitch.

The financial turmoil has already seen Macclesfield lose two managers this season in Campbell and McMahon and plunder the side into a relegation battle when they seemed relatively comfortable.

It isn’t surprising that the players have begun to take action over the lack of resolution with regards to their wages and the club’s overall position, but it’s still something that all parties wish it didn’t have to come to.

The Silkmen fell to a 1-0 defeat last night which keeps them just six points from safety and in need of respite with all that is swirling around the club at the moment.
