Jamal Blackman has returned to Chelsea, with the goalkeeper fracturing his leg for Leeds United’s under-23s this afternoon.

Leeds opted to take Blackman on a season-long loan from Chelsea over the summer, but the goalkeeper’s spell at Elland Road has now ended after a horrific injury.

Featuring for Carlos Corberan’s under-23s, Blackman was caught late in the challenge with a Birmingham City striker, with the goalkeeper stretchered from the field.

Now, Leeds have confirmed that Blackman has fractured his tibia, with the goalkeeper forced to return to Chelsea.

Blackman was treated by Leeds’ medical staff and at the LGI following this afternoon’s incident.

The 25-year-old departs Elland Road having made just two appearances for the Whites, which both came in the League Cup.

He was second choice to Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the league, with the youngster ever-present so far under Bielsa.

The injury setback means that Peacock-Farrell is now Leeds’ only senior goalkeeping option.

Will Huffer is likely to provide competition in the coming weeks.

The Verdict

Firstly, this is a massive blow for Blackman, with a serious injury not good news for any professional.

It’s bad news for Leeds too and leaves Bielsa short in the goalkeeping department.

For Leeds now, they need to get through to January and then look to recruit, as relying on Peacock-Farrell would be a massive risk with the club chasing promotion.
