Charlton Athletic have today confirmed they have accepted the resignation of club director Tahnoon Nimer following his decision to pull his backing of the club last night.

Nimer made a number of social media comments taking aim at Charlton chairman Matt Southall before hinting he was pulling out of the club, and this prompted Southall to issue a subsequent club statement condemning Nimer's actions.

Southall claimed in the statement that Nimer has failed to provide "a single penny of the promised funds", while the Addicks' chairman also criticised his fellow director over his recent attempts to buy Romanian club Dinamo Bucharest.

It has now emerged Nimer has resigned from his position on the ownership team with immediate effect, with this meaning Charlton have lost their financial backing from his Abu Dhabi-based corporation Panorama Magic General Contracting LLC.

The south London club's latest statement claimed that Nimer's position had become untenable following his recent actions, while Southall confirmed that the senior management team will now continue to run the club with its "best interests at heart".

East Street Investments completed their takeover of Charlton from previous owner Roland Duchatelet back in early January, but problems have since arisen with Nimer's lack of finances having prevented the Addicks from committing funds during the January transfer window.

The Verdict

There was reason for so much optimism at The Valley when the club's new owners completed their long-awaited purchase of the club, and this means this latest news comes as a major setback given the progress made over the ownership situation.

Southall and the club's management team are clearly doing their best to reassure supporters following Nimer's shock departure, but it has to be said that the club's long-term future is now looking uncertain without Nimer's backing.

It is important that Charlton maintain a strong level of communication with supporters throughout this difficult situation, particularly given what the fanbase has been through over the last few years following Duchatelet's damaging reign.
