Middlesbrough loanee Patrick Roberts has been ruled out for the next six to eight weeks following his injury against Birmingham City last week.

Jonathan Woodgate acted fast in the January transfer window to bring in Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts on loan for the rest of the season, along with fellow City youngster Lukas Nmecha.

The 22-year-old started off his Championship campaign brilliantly, impressing in their 2-2 draw with Derby County and registering an assist by driving into the penalty area and winning a penalty.

He has played four times so far for Woodgate’s side, with his last appearance coming in the eventful 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City, but he only managed 25 minutes before being forced off with an injury.

Middlesbrough haven’t since played and Woodgate was speaking in his pre-match press conference before the weekend’s visit of Blackburn Rovers. He commented on Roberts’ injury, stating to the club’s official website: “Patrick is looking at six to eight weeks, which is a real blow.

“He’s an outstanding player and exactly who I wanted to recruit. Looking at no.10s in this league, he’s one of the best.

“It’s a hamstring injury, we thought initially it was a precautionary thing so it’s disappointing.

"He'll stay with us for his recovery which I'm pleased about, because I can understand how frustrating this will be for him when he's just joined a new club.

“Players can get burnt out [but] he hasn’t played a lot of football when he was at Norwich for the first half of the season.”

This injury looks set to keep Roberts out of action until March, which is a huge blow for a player who has only just arrived and is only currently supposed to be at the Riverside until the end of the season.
