Barry Ferguson has backed QPR striker Lyndon Dykes to make the step-up to the Premier League in the future.

It has been an impressive start to the 2020/21 campaign for Dykes, who joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers from Livingston in the summer.

The 25-year-old has been a key player for Mark Warburton's side, scoring three goals in nine league appearances for the R's, and proving to be a real handful for opposition defences up top.

Dykes also impressed for Scotland on Thursday night, as Steve Clarke's side qualified for the European Championships following a penalty shootout win over Serbia.

Quiz: Did these 17 QPR players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Dykes led the line for Scotland, giving them a real focal point and aerial presence in the final third, and proving to be key in the win.

Speaking to the Daily Record, former Blackpool and Rangers man Barry Ferguson has backed Dykes to make the step-up to the Premier League in the future, whether that be with QPR or not.

He said: "I will put my neck on the line – Dykes will play in the English Premier League.

"I love his physicality, his hold-up play. We all know that. But I’ll tell you what else I’ve noticed about him – if someone plays a bang-average ball then he will chase it and make it into a good ball.

"He just exudes confidence and plays with a swagger. I’m gutted we never managed to keep him in our top flight. I’d have loved to have seen the former Livi striker at Rangers.

"Dykes has been exceptional and he will absolutely relish going up against Harry Maguire at Wembley."

Dykes will now be looking to help QPR climb up the Championship table, with the West London side currently sitting 18th in the league standings.

The Verdict

Dykes probably hasn't scored as many goals as he perhaps would have wanted so far this season, but he's playing well which is all that matters.

He already has three goals in the Championship for a struggling QPR side, and you would back him to score more goals between now and the end of the season.

He's tall, quick and knows where the goal is, and he has attributes which would help him fit right into life in the English top-flight.

If he did move up to the Premier League without QPR, then he'd bring in a substantial amount of money for the club, you'd think.
