Sunderland's Lynden Gooch has commended his side for a real show of character following the Black Cats' 1-1 draw against Millwall, taking to Twitter to issue his reaction.

Currently out injured, the 27-year-old was forced to experience the game from the sidelines and saw his team go 1-0 down in the 59th minute through Jake Cooper, who made the most of a corner to put the hosts ahead at The Den.

Losing just two league games at home this term, the Lions have been extremely strong at home in the capital and with this, Tony Mowbray's side faced a major challenge in bringing anything back to Wearside.

But the Black Cats did manage to clinch an equaliser without talisman Ross Stewart, with Dennis Cirkin getting on the end of Alex Pritchard's free-kick to secure what could be a crucial equaliser for the visitors in their quest to remain in the play-off zone.

Joe Gelhardt was unable to score on his debut - but the Black Cats won't care about that considering they were able to peg back a potential promotion rival late on to take a point back to the north east.

Gooch is one man who was impressed with his side's result, taking to Twitter to post: Great character.

The Verdict:

Mowbray's side will certainly be happy with a point - but you have to wonder whether they would have claimed three points if Stewart was on the pitch this afternoon.

The latter has been a real game-changer this season and could have made an impact again at The Den - but they can't afford to think about 'what ifs' as they look to keep themselves in the play-off mix.

This latest game was probably one of their hardest trips of the campaign though, so they will certainly take a point.

It's often easy to forget that they were competing in the division below last season, so they are very much a work in progress but the building blocks are there for them to be pushing at the right end of the division.

As long as they can keep the majority of their squad away from severe injury setbacks and have multiple players contribute in the final third in the absence of Stewart, then there's every chance that they could secure a top-six finish.

A point today could make all the difference at the end of the season, so they shouldn't be too disheartened about the fact they weren't able to get three points on the board.

They would have been hoping to build on their win against Middlesbrough and a promising draw against Fulham with another victory - but this is still a solid result.
