Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor is certain he's going to hit it off with fellow attacker Igor Vetokele at the Valley, but it'll take a bit of time.

The Addicks beat Portsmouth this weekend, closing the gap between the two to just two points. Whilst the automatic spots are out of reach, Lee Bowyer's side look a good bet for a play-off spot.

They've got an eight point cushion to Peterborough in seventh, but a ten point gap looking up to Barnsley in second.

That means their efforts will be on becoming a cohesive unit prior to the end of season lottery, something striker Lyle Taylor is confident about.

He formed a deadly partnership with Karlan Grant at the beginning of the campaign, but Grant's move to Huddersfield broke that up. He's now looking to do the same with Igor Vetokele, their 26-year-old Angolan striker.

“Igor is a very, very talented footballer,” he told South London Press and Mercury. “The issue that we’ve had is that me and Karlan spent nearly every single minute playing together. There’s not been much time for anyone else to get a look-in and develop any kind of partnership."

“Me and Karlan didn’t click straight away. We scored goals straight away – but we didn’t click straight away. So, it’s going to take a few games – I think that’s only four starts with me and Igor together."

Taylor grabbed the winner after 51 minutes of their encounter with Portsmouth, after Ronan Curtis had cancelled out Joe Aribo's opener just before half time.

The Verdict

Vetokele has one goal in 15 matches, but has been restricted to outings from the bench, until now.

He's going to be desperate to prove himself as a worthy replacement for Grant. He has to be though, owner Roland Duchatelet wouldn't sanction a move for Joe Mason in the transfer window, leaving Bowyer with little option but to turn to Vetoleke.
