Nathan Jones has overhauled the club's playing style with significant long-term results.

This is Jones' third season and second full season with the club, and it's hard to disagree with the notion that his time with the club has been a huge success. He managed to steer them to survival in his first season and since then they have consistently pushed for promotion.

Last season, the Hatters were beaten 6-5 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals by Blackpool; they were a thrilling set of games but the amount of goals conceded was a worry because of the pressure it put on the attack to be consistent in front of goal.

Jones doubled down, though, rather than compromising on his ideas and it has brought even greater success as they lead League Two by three points from Accrington Stanley.

The nature of his style means that it can produce disappointing singular results such as the 3-2 home loss to Wycombe Wanderers and the 4-0 loss to Port Vale. However, in the long-term it is working successfully and is exciting for the fans to watch. The 8-2 victory against Yeovil Town and the 7-0 win over Cambridge are testament to that.

Luton lead the league in terms of home form with 13 wins from 18 games as well as 51 goals in those games which is close to an average of three per game. Being able to consistently outscore opposition allows them to win the majority of the games against the teams in the lower half even if it comes at the expense of dropping points in key games as well as having a few anomalous results when the attackers have an off day.

Jones sets his team up to play very narrow with the intention to dominate the centre with a compactness between the lines vertically, and he prefers to have two strikers. This leaves the team with plenty of passing options so they can afford to play a patient short passing style which has a strong element of fluency to it.

It is a style that generates a lot of chances, but is also a risky way to play because of the demands it puts on the players. The fans won't mind, though, because it brings results and is some of the best football the Hatters have played for a long time.
